Abstract

Heterostructure physics has been shaped to a large extent by two fundamental ideas of quantum mechanics. One of them is the discreteness of energy spectra in confined systems that has been discussed in Chapter 2. This chapter discusses the other quantum-mechanical cornerstone of heterostructure physics-tunneling.
