Abstract

Asthma has been defined as “[a] disease characterized by an increased responsiveness of the airways to various stimuli and manifested by slowing of forced expiration which changes in severity either spontaneously or as a result of therapy” (Joint Committee on Pulmonary Nomenclature, 1975). According to Wilson (1983a), asthma occurs in between 2 and 20% of the population in developed countries. It is a major health problem because of its disabling and disruptive nature, which often demands changes in lifestyle, and because it is associated with prolonged morbidity and some mortality.
