Abstract

Adrenergic receptor blocking drugs, both alpha and beta, selectively inhibit the effects of norepinephrine, the agonist secreted by adrenergic nerve terminals, and those of epinephrine, the agonist secreted by the adrenal medulla. The dampening of the physiological activities subserved by these endogenous agonists, especially those involving beta agonism, has had considerable and continuing therapeutic significance.
