Abstract

Transgenic mice expressing the EBV latent membrane protein LMP demonstrate epithelial cell hyperplasia. LMP has also been shown to inhibit the terminal differentiation of human epithelial cells in vitro. Psoriasis is a human skin condition involving epithelial cell hyperplasia which histologically resembles LMP-transgenic skin. Psoriasis involves an increase in the thickness of the proliferative layer and a decrease in keratinisation and differentiation. Further the high levels of a number of growth factors produced in psoriatic skin could potentially provide an ideal environment for virus gene expression, virus transformation and virus productive replication. We are investigating the possibility that EBV may be involved in human psoriasis.
