Abstract

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been associated with a variety of clinical syndromes in immunosuppressed and normal hosts. Until recently, Southern blotting (SB) has often been the technique used to demonstrate EBV DNA in a clinical sample. Under optimal conditions, it is possible to detect 106 EBV genomes by standard SB (1). Dot hybridization may be 10 fold more sensitive, but is less specific.
