Abstract
The function of the resistance arteries is influenced by the extracellular and intracellular ion milieu. This is evident not only for caldum, but also for the monovalent ions. The importance of these ions lies in their contribution to the membrane potential and to various co-and countertransport systems. The membrane potential of the vascular smooth muscle cells (V5MC) reflects the distribution and permeability of the monovalent-ions over the cell membrane, and the permeability is determined in the main by the characteristics of the ion channels. Recently a lot of new information about the characteristics of ion channels has become available from patch-clamp experiments. This aspect is dealt with elsewhere in this book (chapter 16, this volume).
