Abstract
For thousands of years, the human race amused itself in roughly the same way. Rare moments of free time were filled with storytelling, conversation, reading, music-making and dancing, leisurely meals, and crafts. Children played with sticks, stones, roughly sewn dolls, or carved animals—making up worlds out of their own fertile imaginations. Long summer days were times for both adults and children to explore the outdoors in active games. Winter days were times to gather together indoors, solidifying family and group ties through conversation and shared learning.
