Abstract

Colorectal cancer ranks as one of the top three neoplasms in industrialized countries, both in numbers of new cases and numbers of deaths (1). In the United States, there are approximately 150,000 new colorectal cancer cases and 60,000 deaths each year(2).Rates of colorectal cancer are somewhat higher in men than women (1,3), but the numbers of new cases and deaths are roughly equal for both sexes, due to the larger proportion of older women in our population. While colorectal cancer incidence rates in the United States tended to increase over the past several decades, mortality rates remained relatively stable and, in more recent years, both incidence and mortality have shown signs of diminishing(2,4).
