Mucosal Swellings, Mucoceles, and Polyps in Paranasal Sinuses

Pathophysiological Implications

  • Chapter
Diseases of the Sinuses

Abstract

There is a large and progressive spectrum in the inflammatory changes of the sinus mucosa from a localized swelling to a mucosal cyst, a deforming mucocele, or a major polyposis. All these terms represents different clinical pictures, easily recognized by the rhinologist, but sometimes intriguing for other practitioners. Intrasinusal chronic inflammatory changes are often discovered on routine radiographs (1, 2). If the CT scan offers invaluable pictures, they are often difficult to interpret by the radiologist without more sophisticated imaging. In fact, in most cases, the diagnostic accuracy of a major sinus opacity is limited before an invasive injection with a contrast medium or an MRI can be performed. Common sense calls for a true partnership between the radiologist and the rhinologist (3).
