Part of the Mathematics: Theory & Applications book series (MTA)

The first section of this chapter contains basic material on C*-algebras. The second section presents definitions and elementary results concerning representations of C*-algebras. The third section is on the special von Neumann algebra ß(H). Here some of the elementary properties of Hilbert space operators are referred to standard texts. The fourth section contains basic material on general von Neumann algebras. The fifth section is a collection of miscellaneous results on C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras. Some of these will only be used occasionally, and some of the more technical proofs are referred to standard texts.
