Abstract
In a monograph in 1898, Poland described physeal fractures at the ankle and established the principle that in children, ligaments are stronger than physeal cartilage. This, combined with anatomy of the physis and direction in which it closes, gives rise to a pattern of injury particular to children and young adults.
