Abstract
The term “palpitations” refers to the sensation of an abnormally perceived heart beat. This common symptom is a frequent reason for referral to the cardiology clinic and can be the cause of considerable anxiety in some patients. Conversely, a high incidence of anxiety disorders is also seen in this group of patients. A significant proportion of patients may not have a detectable arrhythmia following extensive investigation. However, identifying the minority of patients who have a clinically significant arrhythmia is important. Some arrhythmias carry the potential to be life-threatening; others can be readily treated for symptomatic relief. Correct identification of these diagnoses is clearly critical.
