Abstract
Following closely on the heels of early clinical experience with endovascular stent-grafts for the treatment of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms, thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has been rapidly embraced by physicians treating acute and chronic thoracic aortic pathology. As results remained encouraging, this treatment modality has been used more liberally. As with each and every new treatment modality, new problems arose and had to be named. Endoleaks were one of them. These problems were frequently observed and many centers were able to learn onto the mechanisms of these complications and to develop their own strategies to treat these complications and to create algorithms to avoid them in the future. On the other hand further issues arose, being not as frequent, occurring unexpectedly and without any justified clinical or radiological suspicion such as retrograde type A aortic dissection. Such unusual complications, due to their rareness- could not be analyzed by a single center as the incidence was- despite being devastating for the affected individual- fortunately very low. As a consequence a group of physicians interested in aortic medicine focalized their efforts and founded the European Registry for Endovascular Complications (EuREC) being a scientific platform for the collection, analysis, understanding and consecutively, avoidance of unusual complications after TEVAR.
