Abstract
The first heart transplant at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago was in May, 1988. Since that time, we have performed 231 orthotopic cardiac transplantations. In 1996, the strategy for heart transplantation changed from a right atrial technique to a bicaval technique. The primary indications for which transplantation in our patients have been dilated or restrictive cardiomyopathy, ventricular failure following conventional repairs of congenital heart anomalies, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. We transitioned from heart transplantation to staged palliation as primary therapy for hypoplastic left heart syndrome in 1994.
