Abstract
Aim(s): The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate the effectiveness of three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound in categorizing congenital uterine and cervical anomalies. Brief description of the reviewed data: As with any imaging technique, the reliability of 3D ultrasound depends not only on expertise in image interpretation but also on the quality of image acquisition. At first, the technique of 3D volume acquisition and manipulation is explained step by step and some pitfalls are discussed. Then 3D ultrasound images of different anomalies are presented according to the criteria of the ESHRE/ESGE 2013 expert consensus. Finally, standardised measurements on a mid-coronal ultrasound image illustrate how to obtain a detailed and objective description of uterine morphology. Clinical implications: A detailed description of uterine and cervical morphology using three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound in case of a congenital malformation in mandatory to inform the woman on the likely impact of altered anatomy on quality of life and reproductive outcome and on the benefits and adverse effects to be expected in case treatment is considered. Open issues for further research: Further research should investigate the link between altered uterine anatomy and clinical impact or treatment outcome.
