Abstract
Current concepts of transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) are based on the implantation of a double disc occluder. Contemporary devices have shown excellent closure rates and some have been tested in randomized trials with good clinical results. However, the presence of an intracardiac foreign body poses several potential problems: atrial fibrillation, thrombus formation, device fracture, embolisation and erosion. The trend in percutaneous PFO closure is shifting towards new devices which minimize the amount of foreign material left in the atria. This chapter focuses on the latest devices for PFO closure, including experimental devices currently under investigation.
