Abstract
This chapter introduces the research theme of the book and provides the relevant background for the work. The issue of energy access in general and electricity access in particular is presented and the developmental consequences of lack of electricity access are discussed. The purpose of the book and a brief introduction to subsequent chapters completes the chapter.
