Abstract
Posterior circulation stroke accounts for approximately 20–25 % of all strokes. Approximately 25 % of these are due to stenoses in the vertebral and/or the basilar arteries. Atherosclerotic stenosis of the vertebral artery is most common at its origin. Embolization from such lesions is an important cause of posterior circulation stroke. Approximately 1 on 5 posterior circulation strokes occur in the setting of extracranial vertebral artery stenosis. Optimal management of such patients is unclear.
