Abstract

The major histological criterion for the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in-situ is the presence of full thickness epidermal keratinocytic maturation disarray (in marked cases the epidermis appears similar viewed from the top or upside down). Other histological findings that help to secure the diagnosis are atypical mitoses and mitoses in the upper levels of the epidermis and keratinocyte apoptosis. Several clinically distinct entities share the histopathological appearance of squamous cell carcinoma in-situ as noted below.
