This is a disease characterized by primary degenerative changes in the articular cartilage along with new bone formation at its articular margins. Basically it is a disorder of aging, with the primary lying in the decrease in the ratio of total polysaccharide complexes to that of the fiber content of the matrix. Usually the larger joints are affected, but even the small joints of the hands and fingers may be involved.
