This chapter presents numerous opportunities for the reader to avoid common pitfalls during a CPOE project. This begins with the author’s discussion of budget assumptions and planning for the project’s implementation and support. The author intends this chapter to allow the reader to avoid traps and issues common to many CPOE projects. In addition, he presents recommendations for the characteristics of the key physician support personnel and staffing guidelines. He also discusses the importance of addressing the physicians’ responsibility for medical decision-making prior to CPOE implementation.
