Thinking Pattern in Concept Synthesis (1): Expansion of the Thought Space

Abstract

In this chapter, we investigate the thinking pattern in concept synthesis; in particular, we focus on the expansion of the thought space. We conduct an experiment using the method of extended protocol analysis in order to obtain the in-depth data pertaining to the expressed design activity. The results reveal that there is a marginal significant correlation coefficient between the expansion of the thought space and the evaluated score of originality. Furthermore, we find that the thematic relations were used by the designer more frequently in the case of designing a design idea with a high-evaluated score of originality than one with a low-evaluated score of originality. From these results, we infer that expanding the thought space on the basis of the association process leads to a highly creative design idea; in particular, expanding the thought space by using thematic relations is an effective method of creating a highly creative design idea.
