Abstract

Although the clinical informatics subspecialty is new, the term “clinical informatics” first appeared in the informatics literature in 1983 in an article in the Proceedings of the American Association for Medical Systems and Informatics (AAMSI) Congress by Michael A. Jenkin entitled “Clinical specialty systems as an introduction to Clinical Informatics.” Over the succeeding years there has been a great deal of research and development in clinical informatics, and at least a decade of effort to form the subspecialty. Finally, in 2011 the discipline was first recognized as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties and the first specialty board certification examination was in 2013. This chapter describes the background about the development of the subspecialty as well as the core content and training requirements.
