Abstract
Recent data have shown that, among the possible mediators of the pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for atherogenesis in vivo, cytokines may play a major role.1 Cytokines are secreted proteins that have been initially identified as products of fibroblasts or leukocytes; they act as intercellular signals regulating the function of different cell types and, particularly, their proliferation and differentiation. Figure 1 summarizes the different families of cytokines that have been identified. Nine different types of interleukins (IL) have been isolated so far, as well as two different tumor necrosis factors (TNF) and a variety of other substances such as colony stimulating factors, interferons, transforming growth factors (TGF) and platelet derived growth factors (PDGF).
