Abstract
In 1989 we started a WiC group in Greater Manchester (GM-WiC). The first author had tried unsuccessfully to form a group with the help of fellow computing lecturers in higher education, and turned to the Women’s Technology Centre hoping for (and getting!) more positive support. Together with Annie Rafferty, manager of the Women’s Technology and Enterprise Centre (WOTEC), we founded and still form the cornerstone of the group. At the start we had to be clear in our own minds what we wanted GM-WiC to be like, what its objectives should be and the people we wanted to be part of such a group. We intended the group to have three main aims:
-
to produce and disseminate information;
-
to be a discussion and support network;
-
to raise the awareness of the local people to WiC.
