Abstract
After nearly 50 years of rapid advances in vascular surgery and after 25 years of progress in developing noninvasive vascular investigations, the venous system remains enigmatic. Its pathophysiology is a fruitful area of clinical investigation because the component elements of venous dysfunction are incompletely understood. Investigations into venous dysfunction are continuing and research studies and individual patient examinations are being refined. Prospective, randomized studies are appearing in print and meta-analyses are being published.
