The term inflammatory myopathy encompasses a group of disorders characterised by muscular weakness, and often associated with clinical and pathological features suggestive of inflammation. The inflammatory myopathies, as a group of disorders, are the commonest of the acquired myopathies. Characteristically, muscular involvement is mainly proximal, although focal and distal presentations may occur. The syndrome may be acute, subacute or chronic.
