Abstract
This is a congenital anomaly consisting of interruption of the extrahepatic bile ducts. It is the single most common cause of neonatal cholestasis and accounts for approximately half the cases in our series. The atresia may be complete (60% of cases) or partial with preservation of the gallbladder and, in some cases, of the common bile duct. The intrahepatic bile ducts have been shown to be always abnormal with a plexiform and moniliform appearance on cholangiography. The aetiology is still unknown.
