Abstract
The computing system used by Pixar to render their film Monsters Inc., had over 3000 Sun SPARC CPUs, and is one of the most powerful clusters in existence. Just to purchase software licences for such a system would cost over $1 million. At the other end of the scale, however, most of the images in this book have been rendered using Angel on a 66 MHz 486 with 32 Mb of RAM running Windows NT, and a P133 with 40 Mb of RAM running Linux. A faster machine will reduce the time you have to wait, and more expensive software may generate a better-looking image, but the rendering process is otherwise identical. The information in this book applies equally to all the renderers, except where noted.
