Abstract
Heart transplantation (HTx) is now a well-established form of therapy for end-stage heart failure. Almost 35 000 heart transplants have been reported to the Registry of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and approximately 3300 new transplants are being performed each year, of which approximately 300 are in children. The overall 1-year survival worldwide is over 80% — with some groups reporting survival in excess of 90% — with a 5-year survival of over 60%. The major limiting factor to the number of transplants performed today is the supply of suitable donor organs. It is currently estimated that approximately 40 000 people in the USA alone would benefit from HTx each year, a number that could possibly be doubled to provide an indication of the number in the Western world who might benefit from this procedure.
