The Placenta and Umbilical Cord

  • Chapter
Fetal and Neonatal Pathology

Abstract

The placenta and extraplacental membranes are an apposition of fetal and maternal tissues for the purposes of physiological exchange. The placenta has a finite life span and is the body’s largest biopsy and yet its examination is often neglected, even in cases of fetal and neonatal deaths, of sick and premature neonates and some maternal complications of pregnancy. This is perplexing because its function is embodied in its definition. It may be that placental pathology is complex since the organ is evolving rapidly over a short period of time, or that the lesions found may be quantitative rather than qualitative. The response of the placenta to injury is limited and there is a need to correlate the macroscopic and microscopic findings with clinical and laboratory investigations.
