Abstract
Neuromuscular diseases have become better understood as knowledge of the basic processes of neuromuscular function, especially transmission of nervous impulses, the function of the neuromuscular junction and the physical and biochemical processes of muscular contraction, has increased. Indeed, some neuromuscular disorders have themselves led to insights into these basic mechanisms. Huxley (1986) has reviewed the historical background of discoveries in relation to muscular contraction.
