Abstract
The steroids are a class of compounds ranging from cholesterol, which has 27 carbon atoms, to testosterone, which has 19. Their common feature is the cyclophenanthrene nucleus: a structure of four conjoined carbon rings, three of which are six membered and one of which is five membered. We shall be concerned with only two sorts of steroid: oestrogens and progestogens.
