Abstract

This chapter serves as an overview of acute respiratory failure (ARF) and the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and attempts to put these syndromes into a clinical perspective for the other chapters in this volume. First, ARF will be defined and a classification of ARF reviewed. Then the clinical definition of ARDS is considered, particularly noting differences between varying definitions as well as common features. Next the clinical risk factors or the clinical settings of ARDS are reviewed, along with the known information regarding incidence of ARDS for each clinical risk. Finally, the overall incidence of ARDS is briefly discussed.
