Abstract
In the absence of specific, effective medical treatment, patients with chronic pancreatitis are often referred for surgical management of their disease. It is one of the most difficult conditions the abdominal surgeon may be called upon to treat, requiring clinical skill in patient selection and technical skill to overcome the surgical problems associated with a severely diseased gland. Despite these difficulties, unrelenting pain, pseudocyst formation and bile duct obstruction often demand a surgical approach in this relatively young group of patients.
