Abstract

Soft tissue sarcomas are tumours of mesenchymal origin. They can arise in virtually any connective tissue and account for about 1% of all malignant tumours in adults. In children they are proportionatelymore common because of the higher incidence of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. This is dealt with in Chap. 16. In adults, soft tissue sarcomas are encountered in most age groups but are commonest in the fifth and sixth decades.
