Respiratory System

  • Jerry N. Cox

In the industrialized world there have been considerable changes in the pathology of the respiratory system in infants and children during the last two decades. This is largely due to the newer methods for establishing early diagnosis, associated with prompt and more aggressive treatment and with the wide range of antibiotics at our disposal for treating most acute problems. Some of these improvements, however, bring adverse effects with them, and have a distinct morbidity. In contrast, in most parts of the developing world many of the pathological conditions that were commonly observed during the early part of this century are still prevalent, and are often associated with lesions now peculiar to those areas.
