Abstract
The concept of an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is attractive to the patient because it eliminates the need for a permanent ileostomy and is also attractive to the surgeon because it cures the patient of ulcerative colitis. Although the mortality from this complex procedure is remarkably low, there is a substantial morbidity. Approximately a third of all patients will develop complications (Hulten 1986; Vasilevsky et al. 1987; Beart 1988). The commonest complications following restorative proctocolectomy are:
-
1.
Haemorrhage from the pouch
-
2.
Leak from the pouch suture line
-
3.
Pouch necrosis
-
4.
Pouch-anal anastomotic stenosis
-
5.
Pelvic sepsis
-
6.
Intestinal obstruction
-
7.
Pouchitis
-
8.
Pouch-anal or pouch-vaginal fistulae
-
9.
Pouch failure
