Abstract

Suburethral sling operations have won favour throughout the world for cases of recurrent stress incontinence associated with pelvic floor weakness, especially after repeated incontinence surgery. Whilst living muscle tissue has been employed previously, strips made of fascia, synthetic material, or lyophilised dura are currently coming into use, simplifying the procedure considerably. The chances of curing incontinence are excellent; primary success in over 90% has been reported. After the pioneer work by von Giordano (1907, quoted by Ullery 1953) and Stoeckel (1917), sling procedures fell into discredit during the pre-antibiotic era as a result of abscess formation in the paravaginal space. More recently, however, they have experienced a renaissance through reports published by Bracht (1956), Anselmino (1952), Zoedler (1961) (alloplastic strips) and Narik and Palmrich (1962) (fascial slings) (Table 7.1).
