Abstract
As soon as the application of a technology results in a market which is big enough to attract the interest of many customers and several manufacturers the question of standards becomes extremely important. Today’s mass markets such as television, compact discs or personal computers simply could not exist without standards. Particularly in the field of personal computers the problems of incompatibility or quasi-compatibility of equipment from different vendors still cost a lot of money and time. Those involved today in the development of technology for cordless telecommunications and eventually personal telecommunications are indeed interested in creating a mass market for the new technologies, attracting a large number of customers and suppliers of equipment and services. It is therefore not suprising that in the international arena the creation of binding standards is one of the prime activities.
