Abstract
The development of a prototypical multimodal interface in the domain of materials databases is described. The project WING-IIR focusses on a blending of the two natural modes of interaction. natural language and direct manipulation and combination of different retrieval-strategies. Multimodality is seen as the key to avoiding the inherent disadvantages of the individual mDdes. Besides the question of multimodality the integration of intelligent help components and techniques of Intelligent Information. Retrievalform another main point of interest.
