Termination of pregnancy

AIDS and Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Abstract

Whereas in England and Wales it is still predominantly homosexual men who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), HIV seropositivity in Scotland occurs largely in intravenous drug users (60% of all HIV seropositivity) and 60% of those infected in this way live in Edinburgh. This situation arose because of an epidemic of intravenous drug abuse (IVDA) in the early 1980s, documented by the rise in drug-related morbidity during that time, together with widespread sharing of equipment. The introduction of HIV, probably from a single source in mid-1983, meant that the infection swept through the drug-using community.(1) A third of IVDA are women, and others are becoming infected from HIV positive partners. Edinburgh therefore has a serious local problem with HIV infection and pregnancy.
