As in the female, the anterior pituitary secretion of LH and FSH in the male is under the control of the pulsatile hypothalamic release of GnRH. With the start of male puberty, plasma LH levels rise progressively, first during the night and later during the day as well. LH is released in a pulsatile manner at approximately 90-minute intervals. Stimulated by LH, the Leydig cells of the testis secrete testosterone which exerts negative feedback inhibition over LH secretion at the level of the hypothalamus and the anterior pituitary. FSH in combination with the local production of testosterone stimulates spermatogenesis, and enlargement of the testis during puberty is mainly attributable to growth of the seminiferous tubules. Spermatogenesis is associated with the production of inhibin which selectively inhibits the anterior pituitary secretion of FSH.
