Abstract

In 1889, Besnier described skin lesions due to the disease now known as sarcoidosis. In the following 60 years, lesions were described in various other systems, but it was not until the 1950s that the essentially generalised nature of sarcoidosis was recognised, and only in 1953 that the characteristic involvement of the mediastinal nodes was fully documented. The cause of sarcoidosis is still unknown and the natural history is unpredictable. There is no specific therapy.
