Anoxic Encephalopathy Following Resuscitation from Cardiopulmonary Arrest

Abstract

Cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation (CPCR), defined as the institution upon a pulseless, breathless individual of artificial ventilation, artificial circulation, intravenous drugs administration, and electrical defibrillation, is without question an important and successful life-saving procedure. The purpose of CPCR is to provide artificial circulation of oxygenated blood to the vital organs, especially the heart and brain, in an attempt to halt the destructive processes associated with ischemia and anoxia until spontaneous circulation can be restored. Goldberg (1974) stated that “The goal of CPR is to prevent irreversible cerebral anoxic damage after the cardiac arrest.”
