Abstract

There is now sufficient clinical, epidemiological, pharmacological and immunogenetic evidence to demonstrate that rheumatoid arthritis is not a single disease. Rather the term describes a syndrome comprising a non-specific progressive chronic inflammatory symmetrical peripheral polyarthritis, seropositivity for serum IgM rheumatoid factor and juxta-articular erosive changes on joint X-ray (Table 8.1).
