The study of professional knowledge is — even if Aristotle might be said to be its originator — a young field of research. This makes it a difficult and demanding area. Lacking an adequate epistemology of practical knowledge in general, one has to conduct the investigations at the empirical and conceptual levels simultaneously, as these aspects are internally related. On the empirical side, its core is the study of how professional knowledge is developed and maintained, not only at the level of the individual, but also in the working group and the community. Research in this field normally takes the form of case studies.
