Abstract
This chapter presents a broad overview of aortic stenosis and aortic regurgitation. Each is discussed in detail, with an emphasis on etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging, and medical and mechanical therapy. Imaging, a key to the understanding and diagnosis of valvular heart disease, is emphasized and over 30 echocardiograms are presented. All valve diseases are mechanical problems requiring mechanical solutions. Accordingly, surgical aortic valve replacement is widely discussed while transcatheter valve replacement is discussed extensively in Chap. 10. The intent of the chapter is for the reader to have extensive resource document that will present authoritative answers to typical clinical questions about aortic valve disease.
