Abstract
Cloud computing confronts us with a wide range of challenges. In this introduction to the text, we’ll review some of the most important ones and will attempt to situate them within the broader context of the area as a whole. Our goal is to give a sense of the coverage of the book, but also leave the reader with a broad overview of topics not addressed in the book.

Notes
- 1.
More accurately, they do not let the typical developer use these technologies; internally, most do get used, carefully, by the platforms themselves.
- 2.
In fact some systems have used this feature for debugging: applications send IPMC packets on “debugger trace” addresses. If nobody is using the debugger, the network filters out the packets and they “vanish” with no load beyond the network link where the sender was running; when the debugger is enabled, the IPMC routing technology magically delivers these packets to it.
