Abstract

In COLD-1, property-oriented, algebraic specification can be combined with model-oriented, state-based specification. Many existing styles of specification are supported: specification in equational style, specification in pre- and post-condition style, inductive definitions, algorithmic definitions in functional as well as imperative style, etc. Furthermore, there are facilities for modular structuring of specifications. These virtues of the language do not guarantee good specifications and designs. This chapter treats some principles of specification and design whose usefulness in practice has been established. Guidelines and techniques concerning these principles are included as well. The topics concerned are primarily of a stylistic nature. Some topics concerning established scientific results are treated as well.
